Top Places To Visit in Rhodes,Greece

When visiting a new city it’s hard to decide which places are worth the time, and which can easily be missed. Only by prioritizing the right places to see will you be able to ensure you don’t miss a stunner when running after an unnecessary experience. To help you make the right choices we have listed down the top places to visit when in Rhodes.

Medieval City of Rhodes

The largest and the best-preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site in Europe, built by Knights of Saint John back in 1309. The impressive citadel consists of 4km long fortified walls, showing off staggering towers, and strongholds that are still impressively preserved. The citadel offers paved alleys and historical monuments that make for a wonderful walk. Additionally, you will find many local taverns, restaurants, and shops to keep you entertained for hours to come.

Mandraki

After taking in the medieval city you should head to the modern city of Mandraki. In the harbor, you will find three mills of Rhodes, along with the place where the Rhodes Colossus was built, showing off a 30-meter high statue of Helios the god of the sun. Entirely destroyed in 226 BC by a massive earthquake. It was later replaced by two smaller sized statues representing the symbol of Rhodes (a deer). While it may hold national pride, it is nowhere near one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world.

Lindos

Considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Rhodes, Lindos is a great place to see and takes about an hour to reach. Classified as a top archaeological site Lindos offers scenic views all around. Its small white houses are set on top of a hillside looking over the sea. This pedestrian-only town is free from any loud noise or pollution, where you can enjoy the simple things life has to offer. Walking around you will find the village carries a soothing note where you can enjoy local foods and snacks, or even do a little shopping.

Rhodes Beaches

If you are looking to relax, then Rhodes is the best place for you. Here you can start your day at a beach, and end at a completely different one. As there are so many options to choose from, it’s hard to choose the beach you wish to relax on. The best beaches in Rhodes are:

  • Tsambika
  • Faliraki Beach
  • Saint Paul’s Bay
  • Anthony Quinn Beach
  • Afandou
  • Prasonisi
  • Gennadi
  • Glystra
  • Agathi
  • Pefki

Rhodes Castles

An unusual thing you will find is the number of castles built on the island. Most of these were built during the 15th century by the Knights of Saint John and were more like observation posts and forts than castles. However, each castle is beautiful and comes with a specific history of its own.

  • Kritinia Castle
  • Monolithos Castle
  • Feraklos Castle
  • Castle of Archangelos
  • Castle of Askilipio

Kamiros

For those who love history, you will simply love the ancient site of Kamiros. Approximately 35 km southwest of Rhodes is Kamiros. One of the three ancient cities founded by the Dorians. Built on three different levels, following an urban planning system called the Hippodamian grid. At the top is the temple of Athena, & the Acropolis. When you take a step down you find the main city and houses. While the third level is dedicated to the Doric fountain and another temple.

Butterfly Valley

One of the most spectacular places you must visit is the valley of butterflies. Located about 26 km from Rhodes city, the valley is carefully set in the middle of Theologis and Paradisi village. From June to September you will find hundreds of butterflies covering the valley, creating a sight that leaves you breathless. Considered one of Europe’s best sanctuaries, the valley is home to Callimorpha Quadripunctaria butterflies.

Kallithea Springs

If you have a few days in Rhoades then we suggest you take out the time to visit the Kallithea Springs. Located 9 km away from the city the springs opened back in 1929. Offering therapeutic and curative touches the springs are a great place to relax, and might even offer some relief for those who suffer from asthma, diabetes, and arthritis.

Tsambika Monastery

A small Byzantine church that is set on top of a mountain. Getting there is not an easy task, as there are more than 300 steps standing in your way. However, if you are healthy and have some stamina you can make it to the top. We suggest you rest along the way, and even on your way back. Once you reach the top you will be able to take in most of Rhodes and the Tsambika beach. A clear view that makes the entire effort worth it.

Apart from these, there are many places Rhodes has to offer. Depending on the time you have, you can easily add in more spaces such as the seven prints, Epta Piges, small villages, or even go on a full-day trip to Symi Island!
